Sherwin Banfield is a Queens, NY based mixed-media artist with recent work attempting to explore journeys of identity and ancestry. Sherwin's creative practice tends to deconstruct the imaginative and physical journey of identity within his preferred subject matter, the human experience. While exploring the journey of his subject, he would seek to draw a connection between their personal stories and established culture, frequently imposing mythological and imaginative ideas as accessories within his sculptures. Recent projects build upon experimental ideas of encompassing various mixed materials with traditional sculpture; lighting, sound and solar power that he refers to as Sustainable Sonic Sculpture.

‘YEAA-a-a-a-a-ah!’, a tribute to Kool DJ Red Alert’ - This Sustainable Sonic Statue is a celebration of Kool DJ Red Alert and Harlem’s contribution to Hip Hop Culture. Kool DJ Red Alert is a Harlem based legendary Hip Hop DJ whose contribution to Hip Hop is spans over 40 years and into its now 50th anniversary. Red Alert grew up in Harlem during Hip Hop’s infancy and attended parties hosted by the father of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc, and many other early Hip Hop contributors. The influence of these early Hip Hop luminaries steered Red Alert into the art of blending records on turntables to keep party goers dancing and later led to his disc jockey gig at 98.7 Kiss FM. As a young fan of Hip Hop I remember listening to Red Alert on the radio with my portable boombox radio. ‘Borrowing’ my father’s cassette tapes, applying scotch tape to the cassette lock groove to allow for recording, I would record Red Alert’s on air sessions on 98.7 Kiss FM. His influence was profound, as he provided one of a few outlets for legions of Hip Hop fans to hear the latest records coming out of New York’s underground Hip Hop scene.
